Aware of the challenge of developing communicative skills in English in a multicultural and plurilingual setting of socio-economic contrasts such as Peru, the British Council promotes the training of reflective and knowledgeable teachers that could be agents of transformation in their challenging educational realities.
Since 2017, and with the aim of boosting research capacity and developing leading human capital amongst classroom teachers in Peru, we deliver the Champion Teachers Programme of Exploratory Action Research. This is an experience in which EFL teachers are trained to become classroom researchers in an annual cycle running from March to November which covers the following stages:

Thanks to the partnership amongst the British Council's operations in Peru, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and in 2019 Argentina, this programme encourages the exchange of experiences in an international network of classroom researchers who share common challenges and seek to develop their students’ communicative skills in English.
As of date, in Peru we have trained around 60 Champion Teachers as classroom researchers, selected from 1400 applicants from all over Peru. We have globally published the pedagogical initiatives of more than 20 Champion Teachers. We are also very proud of having trained local mentors and trainers to ensure the sustainability of the programme.
What is new about the 2019 call?
2019 is a year of consolidation and institutionalisation of the Programme in Peru. This time the call includes:
- Primary and high school teachers from public schools throughout the country
- EFL teachers trainers of the National Pedagogical Institutes
- Teachers from private universities, colleges and schools sponsored by their respective institutions
